Choosing the right frame for your art
Choose Print Only for an unframed print, Full Bleed for artwork that fills the frame, or Mounted for a white border around the image. The size and frame options on each print page show what is available in your market.
Print Only
You get the print, unframed, at the size you chose, ready for a framer or a frame you already own. Ships within 2 to 4 business days.
Choose it if you want to pick the frame yourself or match frames you already own. Check the exact print dimensions before buying a separate frame.
Full Bleed
The artwork fills the frame without a separate white mount. The frame edge covers a small part of the print, so keep that in mind when comparing it with the unframed image.
Mounted
A snow-white mount sits between the artwork and the glazing, giving the image some breathing room. The visible artwork and outer frame dimensions vary by size.
Mounted and Full Bleed can have different outer dimensions for the same selected print size. Use the size guide on the print page to compare the visible artwork, mount and total wall space before you order.
The frame itself
Full Bleed and Mounted use the same frame profile. Available sizes and finishes are listed on each print page.
- A simple wood frame with a satin finish
- Perspex glazing rather than glass, so it arrives lighter and travels better
- The same Enhanced Matte Art 200gsm paper as an unframed print
- Arrives assembled, with hanging hardware fitted. Ships within 2 to 4 business days
Choosing a frame color
Four colors, one profile. Pick by what you want the frame to do.
- Black for definition. It draws a clean edge around the image, holds up against high-color work, and is the easiest choice on a white or pale wall.
- White to keep the frame quiet. On a pale wall the edge nearly disappears, so nothing sits between the wall and the artwork.
- Natural Oak to pick up light timber. A pale, warm wood that suits oak and ash furniture and sits close to the warm white of the paper.
- Brown to pick up darker timber. The deepest of the two wood tones, and a warmer alternative to black if you want contrast without the hard edge.
Framing the print yourself
Our prints come in several proportions, including portrait, landscape and square. Choose a frame that matches the width and height of your selected print, rather than assuming every artwork fits the same shape. The sizing page explains how to compare sizes.
Check both dimensions and the orientation. Two frames can have the same long edge but different short edges, and a portrait size hangs differently when turned horizontally.
If your frame is a different size
A framer can fit a smaller print into a larger frame with a custom mount. Bring the exact print dimensions and discuss how much of the image the mount opening will show.
Hanging your art
- Start with the center of the image about 145 cm from the floor. It is the usual gallery height and a reasonable default, though a low sofa or a high ceiling is a fair reason to move it.
- Hanging a group, keep the gaps even and align the arrangement on its center line rather than its top edge.
More detail on the paper and the inks is on Printing & Framing, and the FAQ covers the rest. Otherwise, have a look at the prints.
